A rare "corpse flower" is raising a stink, once again, in Melbourne after being lovingly cared for like a baby.

The giant tropical flower, native to Sumatra, began to bloom at Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens over the weekend, filling the glasshouse with the smell of rotting flesh for several days until it enters its death throes. Royal Botanic Gardens' director Tim Entwisle said it's the third time one of the rare titan arums has flowered in Melbourne - and the second bloom for one of the gardens' three plants.

The public in awe of the smelly flower, which only blooms for three days.?

Only 80 or so titan arums have flowered around the world in the past 30 years.

He said the successful flowerings at the Botanic Gardens were due to the nursery team, who spent two years coaxing this particular rainforest plant to bloom for a second time. "They give it lots of love and attention. It's very much treated like a baby," Dr Entwisle said

Melbourne's first corpse flower saw more than 20,000 people flock to the gardens when it bloomed on Christmas Day in 2012; the second flower opened a few weeks later, but it was held in a private area and couldn't be moved for the public to see.

That second plant has since been moved to a public area while it delivers its second, huge bloom. The flower reached 2.61 metres in full bloom on Saturday, which is three centimetres taller than one grown in London's Kew Gardens, Dr Entwisle said.

"Very few botanic gardens around the world have grown it - and it's rare to get one of this size," he said. The public is welcome to see it, and smell it, during opening hours, but will have to be quick. "By Monday, it will start to fade," he said.
